French Post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin is renowned for playing a significant role in the late nineteenth-century symbolist movement.

Mahu, a third gender person in Native Hawaiian and Tahitian cultures, is shown in the picture. Mahu, who were born with a male gender, were revered teachers in their communities and frequently portrayed goddesses in their hula dance performances.

One of the oldest representations of third gender individuals who played both male and female roles can be seen in the picture "The Sorcerer of Hiva Oa". It's significant to note that Gauguin claims this piece represents his Western Gender Standards. The cape worn by the Mahu and the painting's title are notable depictions in the picture, both of which are representations of pagan magic.
