Hannah Gluckstein, a British gender nonconforming painter, adopted the moniker Gluck and began to take on a more masculine appearance in the late 1910s. In the 1920s and 1930s, the gender-neutral Gluck ultimately rose to fame for their floral paintings and portraiture.
A double painting called Medallion features the faces of two women: Gluck and their lover. Gluck, who is in the picture's foreground, has unmade-up, slicked-back hair, and an unconvincing appearance. The photograph was notable at the time it was made because it mirrored Gluck's own gender narratives, which adopted a sense of style that deviated from the norms of what a woman should wear. It was crucial for them to express themselves via their bodies and photographs.
